Hail 'Ka Bel'

Okay, I am a very emotional and sensitive person. I easily cry (well, lately..it started during my sophomore year in college) and I am always moved by inspiring stories and documentaries and other sorts of the like. I tell you, movies always make me cry. That's why my date always has the advantage inside the movie house because I would definitely need a shoulder to lean on and a hanky to borrow for I hate bringing bags or pouches (but please, don't date me 'coz am not a fan of such). Alright, then yesterday morning my housemate bought a newspaper. He always grabs one each morning for him to keep on track of current events, for his blog's sake.

To my surprise, the frontpage made me burst into tears. The news about Ka Bel, the congressman representing ANAKPAWIS, who died falling from his bungalow's rooftop crushed my world apart. Realizing the fact that he lived in a low class house even when I know for a fact that he could afford buying a condo unit in the metropolis was very painful. Well, that is if he opened doors for the mainstream culprits in the government to swallow his pride. Then all the rants of the Meralco and the Government preceded on the other pages. Then I turned on the television and the news was about Gloria Arroyo's wealth which skyrocketed this year compared to last year. And opposite to that of Ka Bel's net worth and list of assets, Madam GMA's were talking millions.

It hurts me think that implicitly, it was because Ka Bel, despite his age, managed to fix their roof that led to his death. If only he lived in a well furnished place and a carpenter was there to fix what he had to fix, then maybe we still had a hero in this doomed country. Maybe a tear never would have flown in sadness. Maybe it would have been tears of joy for learning that in a society filled with materialistic desires, there was a person who remained dignified.. a simple man who made massive and magnificent changes to a country I call Philippines.
